In a move that will surely be welcomed by the residents of Port Phillip, the City Council has made the decisive move to upgrade the existing CCTV systems, a decision that was made on Wednesday night. This decision is a part of the Council's commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its residents, and it comes in the wake of a comprehensive review of the Community Safety Plan and Public Place CCTV Policy.

The Council has recognised that the current Public Place CCTV system is nearing the end of its functional life and needs to be replaced. The upgrade will optimise the system in terms of location, take advantage of the latest technologies, and ensure the security and availability of data. 

Despite the Council's belief that funding for such systems should be the responsibility of State and Federal governments, and their continued advocacy for such support, no external funding has been made available. In light of this, the Council has decided to fund the renewal and upgrade of the CCTV systems themselves.

The upgraded CCTV systems will hopefully assist in reducing antisocial behaviour but will also aid in crime prevention. The decision has been well received by residents, traders, and visitors alike, who see it as a positive step towards a safer community.

Victoria Police have also indicated that Public Place CCTV cameras improve public safety and security by helping them identify, locate, and respond to crime more effectively. The upgrade will undoubtedly assist police in their surveillance activities, making Port Phillip a safer place for all.
