This report comes the same week as IBAC’s Operation Sandon report into council collusion with developers, with the State Government now planning to strip powers away from council. Vice President Dean Hurlston says “It is clear the current model of how councils operate is fundamentally broken”. “The Local Government Act 2020 failed to set any rules for what counsellors should be responsible for and gave the industry a $12 billion a year blank cheque for their activities”. “It is no coincidence that since the local government reforms, average council spending and salaries have increased, while transparency in community satisfaction has steadily decreased”. “How can anyone be happy with the job councils are doing when nobody can define what they're paying for? “What will the minister or MAV do to continued spiraling public satisfaction with councils? This can't be allowed to continue in a cost-of-living crisis. Victorians deserve to know.
